Keyword Brainstorming - 7 Tricks of the Trade

If you're serious about your internet business, "keyword brainstorming" is a critical element to your success. Keyword research is incredibly valuable to any online business. The best way to get started researching keywords is to have a brainstorming session and simply begin writing out of all of the keywords that you feel would be the best fit for your website or your business on the internet. You want to build a solid foundation of general keywords so that you can then expand on those general keywords later on.

Here are 7 tricks of the trade that will kickstart your keyword brainstorming session:

1. Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI). Search engines measure the relevance of a website based on keywords. The greater number of keywords you have that are relevant to your main keyword or the keyword that was searched for, the higher ranking your site will achieve. LSI is a very powerful technique in getting your website ranked highly in the search engines.

2. Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI). This is an effective method to measure how much competition exists for a particular keyword.  If you take the number of searches Google is predicting for a search term each month and then cross reference that with the number of results pages that are found within Google, you can get an idea of the competition that stands between you and a high search ranking.

3. Long Tail Keywords. A keyword phrase that includes two or more actual words can be defined as  a long tail keyword. Generally speaking, the greater number of words in the keyword phrase, the less competition you will see. When keyword brainstorming, people often make the mistake of focusing on the main keyword that receives an enormous amount of traffic. The problem with this is, there is so much competition for these keywords that most people don't stand a chance. Focus on long tail keywords with far less competition and you'll have a much greater chance of your website showing up high in the search engines.

4. Google Keyword Tool. This is a free keyword tool that can provide an enormous amount of related keywords to your main keyword term. This tool will even show you the level of competition your up against and the average monthly search volume for your main keyword and related keywords. Don't waste time using other keywords services anymore. Simply go to Google and search "Google Keyword Tool". This is the best method I've found to fly through keyword brainstorming.

5. Segment Your Keyword Lists. Google search algorithm has become way to advanced to simply target general keyword terms anymore. You have to break things down into keyword lists. One keyword list per each webpage you have on your site. You need a separate list for every webpage, with a main keyword and then sub keywords underneath this. When putting together these lists you also want to try and undercover many hidden markets that you never would have thought of previously.

6. Web Directory Hunting.  This is another way you can "think outside the box." Go to yahoo and click on the various directories on the left side of the screen. You can then drill down into these directories that relate to your keyword and find out what other people are using for their keywords lists. A few other popular web directories are Ebay, Dmoz and Amazon.

7. Meta Tagging.  This is a great way to find keywords that are directly from your competitors. You want to look at your competitors meta tags in the source code of their website. Find who is getting the top search rankings on google for your particular niche and open up their HTML source code. Find the area called Meta Tags and look for a code line that says "meta name" and there you will find all the keywords your competitor is targeting. Always start by identifying who your competition is and then go to their websites and view their meta tags.

When performing your initial keyword brainstorming, it's best to use a spreadsheet to keep track of all the keywords you come up with. Focus on analyzing longer tail keywords to give yourself a competitive advantage over your competition. You'll be rewarded in the long term for putting in this extra bit of effort with your keyword brainstorming in the initial stages.  More keywords equals more money. You want to piggy back off your successful competitors. There is no reason to try and re-invent the wheel yourself. Follow what the leaders in the industry are doing to get started and then improve on this.
