Android this week: Google Wallet opens; Android 4.0 grows; T-Mobile’s Galaxy Note tested

Android 4.0 is finally getting out on phones and tablets according to Google’s dashboard. Surprisingly, the next version, Jelly Bean, is gaining adoption quickly too. Google’s Wallet now supports more credit and debit cards while T-Mobile’s Galaxy Note blurs the lines between smartphone and tablet.

android-this-week

The Google Wallet mobile payment service hasn’t yet taken off, partly because of limitations. Wallet originally launched on a single smartphone — Sprint’s Nexus S — hasn’t been embraced by other carriers and was limited to a single credit card option. Wallet works well for payments in places that accept it and with some changes this week, more people could be using it in the near future.

Google expanded Wallet support beyond the original Citi MasterCard, so that it now works with other MasterCard options, Visa, Discover and American Express. Google says it works with debit cards as well and the service is more secure: Card information is stored in the cloud, not on the device itself. And Wallet can be disabled remotely if your phone or tablet is lost; I tested that this week and it works. With these changes, plus support on newer devices with NFC chips — think about those 10 million Samsung Galaxy S III phones already sold — Google Wallet could see more usage overall.

Android 4.0 is seeing more usage, as well. For that matter, so is Android 4.1, which only launched last month. Google’s dashboard that shows the version number of Android devices hitting the Google Play store was updated this week. The number of phones and tablets running Android 4.0 nearly doubled to from the prior month, accounting for 15.9 percent of the total Android population visiting the Play store. Jelly Bean, or Android 4.1 quickly went from zero to 0.8 percent; impressive considering how few devices run the software.

Part of the reason for this boost is because handset makers are finally upgrading older devices to Android 4.0, which debuted in October of last year. That’s good news for consumers due to the improved look and feel of the platform over the old Android 2.3 software; now more than 18 months old. The other factor is Google’s Nexus 7 tablet which ships with Jelly Bean. No official sales figures have been revealed yet, but based on Jelly Bean already nearing one percent of devices in under a month, combined with Nexus 7 orders held up due to demand, Google looks to have a hit tablet of its own.

That leads to the definition of a tablet, which the Samsung Galaxy Note may meet. The 5.3-inch phone is often called a “phablet” due to being both smartphone and small tablet. Although the device hit the market months ago, T-Mobile has just picked it up and I got an early look. As you can see by my video overview, the Galaxy Note — mostly unchanged from the AT&T version although it ships with Android 4.0 — is big but thin, a solid performer and likely a two-handed device for most people.

Timing could be important for this device’s launch as Samsung has confirmed it will be announcing a successor device later this month. The Galaxy Note II is rumored to have an even larger 5.5-inch screen; not surprising to me as I believe tablets will replace smartphones for most within the next several years.

Android this week: HTC One X+ leaked; LTE Photon Q coming; Galaxy S III sales humming

Last week it was Android tablets, this week was about Android smartphones. Sprint announced a QWERTY keyboard version of the Photon Q with LTE, while Samsung’s Galaxy S III continues to set sales records. Can the leaked HTC One X+ slow Samsung’s momentum?

android-this-week

Tablets such as the Nexus 7 had the spotlight last week, but this week was more about Android smartphones. At this point, most of the new handsets — with a few exceptions of the lower end models —  are finally launching with Android 4.0, Google’s platform that was announced in October of 2011. The improved platform combined with the latest hardware innovations are continuing to propel Android handset sales forward.

The top seller this year may already be Samsung’s Galaxy S III, which only launched in late May. This week, Samsung announced 10 million sales of its flagship phone and that surely helped the company’s overall handset sales figure. Samsung hit record profits — $4.5 billion — in the second quarter of 2012 and according to IDC estimates, sold 50.2 million handsets during that time period.

Putting those figures in perspective: Samsung’s total mobile phone sales for the quarter were nearly double that of Apple, which announced 26 million handset sales in April, May and June. And 20 percent of Samsung’s phone sales were comprised of the Galaxy S III. Another interesting statistic? Samsung sells 190,000 Galaxy S IIIs per day on average. We know that Google is now activating one million Android devices per day, meaning that the Galaxy S III is a sizeable chunk of those activations.

Of course, there’s room for other smartphones in the market too; this week one new phone was announced, while another was leaked. Sprint announced a 4G LTE update to the original Motorola Photon Q, coming in the near future. At 960 x 540 resolution, the 4.3-inch screen won’t have the most dense pixel count, but nearly all other components are appealing: A 1.5 GHz dual-core processor;, Android 4.0.4; 8 megapixel camera; five-row keyboard; and world phone capabilities with support for CDMA, EVDO, GSM and LTE.

Sprint hasn’t yet announced pricing and availability details, but the phone is real. The same can’t be said of the HTC One X+, which is rumored to be a handset coming to T-Mobile. The carrier opted to pass on the original HTC One X in favor of the smaller One S, which is a solid smartphone. But like all other One devices in the U.S., it doesn’t have the quad-core Tegra 3 processor, which has no integrated LTE support.

According to leaked information found by TMoNews, the HTC Era 42 is a One X with a Tegra 3 processor, possibly clocked at 1.7 GHz. Given that T-Mobile is the last of the big four U.S. carriers to migrate to an LTE network, it makes sense that a Tegra 3 version of the HTC One X could be coming. It would provide HTC a better chance to compete against Samsung’s Galaxy S III juggernaut.

The Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.2 Update Is Now Happening

It was announced earlier by Samsung that they will be updating the Android 2.2 and it will be made available via Kies software upgrade program. In case you do not know what Kies is, it is an application for desktop that currently is made compatible with Windows. Now, this is good news as to date, almost all Android mobile phones have received their Android 2.2 updates. The Samsung Galaxy S on the other hand is the last of those Android mobile phones to ever receive the Android 2.2 or Froyo update. If you are an OSX user, then there is no need for you to worry, because you won't be left out.

The Korean manufactured who promised the Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.2 (Froyo) update has finally arrived. Samsung via a press release announced that they official Android 2.2 (Froyo) update have started it current rounds of updates.

The Nordic Samsung Galaxy S owners were the very first lucky ones to ever receive the I9000 JPM update. You do not have to worry, as it will gradually roll out to other European, Middle East, Southeast Asia, North America, Africa, North America and basically to the whole world.

The following are the much awaited Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.2 (Froyo) update:

- Adobe Flash Player 10.1 compatibility

- Android 2.2 JIT compiler

- Better exchange support

- Colored icons in settings

- Fully improved default keyboard

- Improvements in speed

- GPS Fix

- Settings with colored icons

- Pinch to Zoom home screen flyover

- Navy blue color (Darker Menu Theme)

- New Android market with Auto- updates

- New search widget

- Media hub

- New Gmail application

- Slightly different transitions and graphics with application drawer and a default icon dock

- An Added Quick link to "Auto rotation" and "GPS" toggles on the notification bar

- Video recording in MP4 format

Now, with all these new Android 2.2 (Froyo) update, I am sure that you will enjoy your Samsung Galaxy S even more. It may not be as famous as the iPhone 3GS or the Nexus Ones or the Motorola Droid, but it is way better than all these three mobile phones combined. It is equipped with S5PC110 as its processor. It also has the fastest Graphics Processing Unit or GPU at around 90 million triangles per second. With these things and the new Android 2.2 (Froyo) update, I am sure that you will fall in love once again with the Galaxy S.
