Review: NBC's stumble can't mask Olympics' beautiful opening ceremony

Olympics 2012 Fireworks cover the Olympic Stadium during Opening Ceremonies. (Wally Skalij / Los Angeles Times / July 29, 2012)

Through a fortuitous series of events, because someone knew someone who knew someone, I watched Friday's remarkable opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games by way of the BBC — which is to say, without commercials or Ryan Seacrest and with relatively little intrusion from the commentators. Later, I saw what the United States saw.

Fellow Americans, you have my sympathy.

Titled "Isles of Wonder" and conceived by Danny Boyle, the director of"Slumdog Millionaire," it was by turns moving, bizarre, funny and exciting and often surprisingly dark. It included the queen, in a James Bond parody, seeming to parachute into the Olympic stadium ("I hope it made people laugh," she was heard to say the next day), a troop of Mary Poppinses vanquishing Lord Voldemort, a pastoral village destroyed by the dark satanic mills of the Industrial Revolution, and a musical trip through time culminating in the invention of the World Wide Web.

It had at times a quality of seeming completely random even as one suspected that repeated viewings would reveal all sorts of connections and echoes and interior rhymes. If there were a through-line to be untangled from its $42-million, cast-of-thousands, higgledy-piggledy progress through modern Britain, it might be something like, "Sorry for the unintended consequences, but we did give you steam engines, great pop music and comedy and the roots of social networking. It was ugly there for a while, but we're all right — and everybody dance now."

PHOTOS: London Olympics opening ceremony

On the BBC, this ran as a seamless four-hour stream. On American television, it ran half an hour longer to accommodate commercials, with additional time carved out of the show itself, destroying its pace and shape. Controversially, NBC cut an entire sequence, Akram Khan's dance on the theme of mortality, which served as a meditative transition between Boyle's main show and the parade of athletes, in favor of Seacrest's perfectly unenlightening interview with swimmer Michael Phelps.

The commentary was by Bob Costas, NBC's veteran voice of the Olympics; "Today" host Matt Lauer; and his former co-host Meredith Vieira. They are all in the talking business — silence (that is, the absence of talk) is as good as dead air — and in the absence of anyone else to interview, they will inquire unto themselves: When Lauer said, during a tribute to the National Health Service, "I am sitting here watching this, I'm thinking what an incredible experience for these doctors and nurses. They're looking around them in this Olympic stadium thinking, 'My goodness, I'm part of something incredibly special,'" he was only telling you about Matt Lauer, sitting and thinking and claiming to know what other people were feeling.

That is worse than saying nothing at all.

GRAPHIC: Your Olympics TV-watching guide

In defending its decision not to live-stream Friday's proceedings — an economic decision (making people watch ads) it attempted to cast as an aesthetic one (advancing television as the "medium that best demonstrates their grandeur and majesty") — NBC sought to delineate a difference between the Games, which it is streaming whole, and the framing ceremonies, which it termed "entertainment spectacles."

I see less of a difference. Because although unquestionably a sporting event, the Olympic Games are also a kind of theater, an unscripted performance on the theme of athletics as much as an athletic contest in fact.

They draw viewers who otherwise might spend no time thinking about such things and weave them in with narratives of individual excellence, hardship overcome and global unity (within a framework of global competition) that are difficult to resist. This quality has been amplified in recent years by the ceremonies that celebrate them; these can waver between magic and kitsch, between austere beauty and manipulative sentiment, but there is nothing on Earth to match them in scale or reach.

And as theater, these ceremonies are also a kind of sport, with each successive host nation striving to outdo the last. For many years, the parade of competing athletes was the spectacle; thematically, it's still the heart of the show, a many-colored cavalcade of gorgeous humanity that stays unchanging within the Games' changing contexts. Now, without losing its inspirational glow, it has became a kind of breather between the high-tech wonders of the first act and the final uplift of the oath-taking, flag-raising, torch-lighting finale.

Saturday's broadcast, in which the Games officially began, was the familiar mix of crafted drama, emphasizing rivalries and obstacles; athletes being asked "How do you feel?" before and after wins or losses; and commentary that ran from the unhelpful to aphoristic to the technically enlightening. Costas' summaries sound smart; new kid Seacrest, here I guess for youth appeal, filed a filmed interview with Phelps, his mother and sisters that was cute, for better or worse, but it's still too soon to judge his usefulness here.

But it is all beautiful and thrilling to behold, and whenever the professional talkers begin to pall, it proves just as beautiful and thrilling with the sound down.

Review: 'The Producers' still zings despite flubs at the Bowl

Producers Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Leo Bloom, Richard Kind as Max Bialystock and Dane Cook as Franz Liebkind in the musical "The Producers" at the Hollywood Bowl. (Lawrence K. Ho / Los Angeles Times / July 29, 2012)

"The Producers" returned to Los Angeles for three performances this past weekend at the Hollywood Bowl. And during the curtain call at Friday's opening, Mel Brooks, who wrote the giddy score and co-wrote the zany book with Thomas Meehan, came onstage to express his gratitude to the audience and to compliment the cast for pulling it together in a short period of time.

"They're almost good," he kidded, which pretty much sums up my appraisal of the production, directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman, whose two Tony wins added to the show's record-breaking haul of 12.

The rushed logistics of producing a big musical at the Bowl didn't allow Stroman to live up to her perfectionist reputation. Microphones were erratic, lines were flubbed, a door refused to open, costume changes hit roadblocks. At one point, after a longish delay, Richard Kind, who played Max Bialystock in a performance that was a good deal better than "almost good," returned to the stage with the excuse that is eminently forgivable in L.A.: "Traffic."

But even with these snags, "The Producers" demonstrated its extraordinary tickling power. The show, which bridges the distance between Broadway and the Catskills, is awash in jokes that make you either want to laugh or groan. (I'll confess that the older I get, the funnier they seem.)

Brooks isn't vying for membership in the Rodgers & Hammerstein club, but the songs he wrote for "The Producers" have undeniable pep and ingenuity, especially when the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, under the musical direction of conductor Kevin Stites, is going full bore. Yes, the show is a bit overstretched even with the cuts that were somewhat awkwardly made near the end of the show to ensure that the Bowl's curfew would be met. But who can complain when grinning?

The musical, to my surprise, has taken on a surprising relevance. Seeing "The Producers" for the first time since the financial crisis threw the country into recession, I couldn't help marveling at just how incisively the show, in zingy parable form, foreshadowed the greed-induced catastrophe we're digging ourselves out of.

The plot, after all, involves a scheme hatched by Max and his wimpy new bookkeeper, Leo Bloom (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) to make a killing off of a Broadway flop. All it takes is a little "creative accounting" of the kind Wall Street has relied on to enrich itself while everyone else goes bust. "The Producers," I suspect, will one day be used as a teaching tool by economic historians to explain the Great Recession.

In the meantime, the shtick is more or less foolproof. Alumni from the original Broadway cast, including Roger Bart's fiercely flamboyant Carmen Ghia and Gary Beach's spotlight-hogging director Roger De Bris, were on hand to keep the comic level high. (Bart might have set the record for the longest sibilant "s" in his mincingly hilarious portrayal of De Bris' live-in "assistant," and Beach reminded us why he nabbed a Tony for his performance.)

Kind, who brought to mind Zero Mostel from the original 1968 film more than Nathan Lane from the more recent stage and screen musical versions, should be given a chance to reprise his refreshingly unhammy Max, although the spotty attendance at the Bowl on Friday suggested that it might be too soon for a major revival.

Kind allowed the comedy to emerge directly from the character, something Ferguson wasn't quite able to manage in his rather self-conscious performance as Leo. At times, it seemed like Ferguson had been given last-minute notes on how to punch up the humor, and it was really only when he was singing that he relaxed enough to let his natural talent flow.

Stand-up comedian Dane Cook brought Franz Liebkind to life with fierce conviction. Playing the playwright whose "Springtime for Hitler" is the guaranteed-to-close property Max has been searching for, Cook earned his laughs strictly through his characterization, and he delivered his big musical number as though he had been fated to play a prancing cartoon Hitler.

The chorus number of old ladies with walkers (Max's harem of geriatric investors) never fails to slay me. So out of gratitude I'll refrain from mentioning Rebecca Romijn's wobbly Swedish accent and even wobblier singing voice and just say that she fetchingly fleshed out the bombshell contours of a character whose endless name begins with Ulla and ends somewhere north of Stockholm.

That gag, like most of the routines in "The Producers," is as old as it is irresistible, so how about we save our groaning for the evening news and just appreciate the mirth.

Google Honeycomb:A Review Of Google's New Android 3.O For Tablets

Android 3.0 is the latest mobile operating system created by Android Inc. Android was acquired by Google in 2005. The concept of Android is based on an altered edition of the Linux kernel. Google and other members of the Open Handset Alliance worked together on Android's development and launch. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is tasked with the maintenance, and even more development of Android.

Android 3.0 has been given the name Honeycomb and is the latest version of the Android platform that's particularly enhanced for products with bigger screen sizes, particularly tablets. It presents a fresh, really virtual and "holographic" UI design, and an elegant, content-focused interaction model.

The first Honeycomb tablets on the market will be the LG G-Slate and the Motorola Xoom.

Google's Honeycomb develops the things individuals love most about Android- enhanced multitasking, rich notifications, home screen personalization, widgets, and much more and converts them with a vibrant, 3D experience and much deeper interactivity, which makes them familiar and even much better than before. The Android 3.0 platform consists of an up-to-date set of regular programs which are created to be used on bigger screen devices.

Honeycomb consists of new online connectivity functions that include versatility and comfort for customers. Built-in support for Media/Photo Transfer Protocol lets customers immediately sync media files with a USB-connected digital camera or desktop computer without needing to attach a USB mass-storage device.

Customers can also connect full key boards over USB or Bluetooth, for a comfortable text-input environment. For enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity, a brand new combo scan decreases scan times across bands and filter systems. New support for Bluetooth tethering indicates that more types of products can share the network interconnection of an Android-powered device.

Probably the most fascinating function included in Android 3.0 is Google's response to FaceTime and Skype: Gtalk. The Android Honeycomb up-date consists of video chat making use of Gtalk. FaceTime and Skype just became a very effective new rival and 2011 appears set to host a couple of video conferencing showdowns.

The company is also competing with Kindle and Apple's iBooks by the inclusion of an eBook reader and also the Google Books download program. Google says there will probably be "millions of books" obtainable on the move, complete with page turn animated graphics. Needless to say, Apple said the exact things about iBooks and, apart from a stunning user interface, the application was bare and also the store included extremely few publications.

The popularity of the Android applications have grown to such an extent that no company would want to leave the Android application customers unattended. The cut-throat competition has made every single buyer really important for the business. This means that it has become almost mandatory for the company to get an Android app developed.

Additionally, Google is challenging the other such OS by maintaining the adoption price at lower end. Although Windows OS license for such products costs around U.S. $50-60, Android comes with an appealing price tag of just $10. Apart from the software component, a substantial difference of USD 30 in between Intel and ARM processor is also a factor for players to invest in Android platform for their tablet devices.

Android Froyo Review - Frozen Yogurt by Google

Google has become one big name in the world of the internet for years. This has happened mainly thanks to the reliability of Google search engine which is mostly used worldwide. As a matter of fact, most internet users find content or information on the internet by entering relevant keywords into Google search engine. However, Google has also expanded its business to other aspects, one of which is mobile phone technology.

Within more or less the last 21 months, Google has been innovating in developing what they call Android which is really an operating system designed for mobile phones. There has been Android 2.0, 2.1 and finally today there is the Android 2.2 - or more commonly known as Android Froyo. Wait, you really think Google is making frozen yogurt like the ones you have at restaurants out there? Come on, give me a break!

But if you do use a mobile phone that comes with Google Android operating system, you should know further about this Android Froyo. Among all versions of Android operating system Google has developed so far, Android Froyo can be considered as the most complete and practical version. However, though, it is not really as complete as expected by most Android mobile phone users. There are still chances for patches here and there. But first, let's look at the improvements offered by this Google's Froyo.

To get things started, the first aspect of improvement is the speed. If you have been Android users for the past months, you should have known by now that Android has a persistent problem of lagging. Fortunately, that is now fixed. As a matter of fact, Android Froyo is able to boost overall performance by 2 to 5 times as much as previous versions of Android.

If you wonder how this is possible, here is how it works. One of the major improvements in Android is the just-in-time compiler. This compiler is developed for Dalvik. This is what makes things really fast in Google's frozen yogurt operating system. Related to the faster performance, Google claims that the battery life is getting a bit better in its Froyo. But don't expect too much!

The next improvement in this Froyo by Google is its browser's support for Adobe Flash technology. If you want to have this on your Android phone, it is optionally downloadable from the Android Market. One good thing - it seems - about the Flash support is that it can be activated when the user wants to do so. This way, the user will not have to wait for Flash scripts to load each time they are about to view web pages. However, there is also one drawback regarding the Flash technology for Android. It is not quite in final release yet. With that being said, Froyo user will not be able to experience what they can usually obtain from their desktop PCs such as H.264 video acceleration.

Now, what about Android Froyo interface? Well, it is still pretty complicated for some. But, one advantage for sure is that, today, the user has the option to protect it with a password. Another change is the interface that is shared by messaging applications and Google Talk. In Google's Android Froyo, these applications share black texts on some kind of purple background. Alright, that's it with the interface. What about other functionalities offered by this particular version of Android?

Speaking of functionalities, Android now enables its user to switch easily from one account to another by simply tapping the name of the account to switch to. The account names themselves are pretty accessible, waiting exactly at the top right hand corner.

Still speaking of functionalities, there are great improvements when it comes to camera applications. There is no more slider that fails every now and then - just like in Google's previous versions of Android. Instead, camera-related functions can now be found upfront.

One thing that we seem to miss in terms of functionalities is the Froyo's connectivity. Well, Froyo can be connected to a PC as means of USB storage. Yet, other connectivity innovation is that the user can now share 3G over their Wi-Fi connection. Unfortunately, only WPA2 security is available. Yet, one more thing important with regards to connectivity is of course social networking. Therefore, Google has built Facebook as well as Twitter into its Android frozen yogurt mobile operating system.

Yet, one last thing about functionalities is that the user is now offered with pinch-to-peek capability. This way, the user will not have to open every single program or gallery just to know what is running. This is similar to what Windows 7 offers and yes, this is pretty practical, at least to most users.

So, are you ready for Google's frozen yogurt?

Keyword Country is a unique free keyword research tool to find profitable keywords. Just type in a keyword & Keyword Country will find you load of keywords for your SEO, PPC and AdSense Campaigns. Keyword Country keeps a close eye on the online industries and discovers most happening keywords even before Search Engines do. Using KeywordCountry for keyword research is just like searching on Google. Yes, you get the relevant keyword results right away with all the details that you need to be successful with AdSense! Just imagine Google suggesting keywords for your website! Well, this is what you will feel while searching keywords via Keyword Country. Keyword Country can help you with these task:

1. Basic Keyword Research (Network Search):

Just type in a keyword and Keyword Country will fetch you a huge list of keywords, which will be sorted by profitability along with other alternate keywords that your audience is searching for. This mode of keyword research is database powered. Keyword Country claims to be the world's biggest keyword database and displays useful information like:

· Google Searches

· Yahoo Search Volume

· MSN Search Volume

· Advertisers on Google

· Yahoo Advertisers

· MSN Advertisers

· Google Competition (inanchor intitle)

· Yahoo Competition

· MSN Competition

· Google Clicks

· AdSense EPC (estimated)

· Google Max CPC

· R/S Ratio (Google, Yahoo, MSN)

· KEI Ratio (Google, Yahoo, MSN)

Since the data is too much to look at, an advanced search can help you narrow down the huge keyword lists to get the exact keywords you want. Besides keywords and their data, the related keywords list is quite useful and you often get new ideas for niches to target and content ideas that can help you tap into the audience that you are trying to target.

2. Realtime Keyword Research:

This is another mode of keyword research and is even more powerful than network keyword research. It not only extracts keywords from major search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN and Ask but also gets keywords from KC's Network Search and, most importantly, it reverse engineers any industry's top 100 high ranking websites for each keyword in the list. It also extracts niche keywords that those websites are targeting to rank high and tap traffic out of search engines. This type of keyword research easily finds new born keywords that industry is using actively but that free keyword tools like those offered by Google, Yahoo and MSN will take around 2-6 months to show and will only show if the keyword is able to make to their top 100 or 150 most searched keyword lists.

Realtime Keyword Research:

· Blocks junk keywords

· Filters duplicate keywords

· Keeps the keyword list laser targeted

· Clusters the keywords in ready-to-go format

· Gives you a great amount of control on your keyword research

3. Stealing Competitor's Profitable Keywords- Site Analysis

This is a very powerful tool and I couldn't find anything similar to this tool anywhere on the web that comes even close to KC's Site Analysis. It lets you practically reverse engineer the SEO strategies and PPC campaigns of your competitors. It can detect the search engine keywords (paid or non-paid) that are responsible for up to 96% of traffic to any given website. Just load up your competitor list in Site Analysis and Keyword Country will rip all the keywords that your competitors are using on their pages, along with the HTML tag details in which they can be found.

For SEO:

· Finds keywords that are common between all top rankers

· Finds the LSI matches they are using

· Finds Low competition / high traffic keywords

· Details of other niches that they are focusing on

For PPC Advertising:

· Analyze landing pages and extract profitable keywords out of them

· Profitable Adwords keywords that they have found profitable after spending thousands of dollars on market research Site analysis even lets you analyze your own content before making it public to search engines to ensure that the keywords for which you are optimizing your content are actually there in your content.

4. Semantic Keyword Research/ Related Search Terms: This keyword research lists all the LSI terms or semantically related keywords of a given keyword. These are the keywords that you need to include in your web pages to naturally rank higher on search engines. Keyword results come with 'Search Volume Estimates', which make it easier for you to judge the keywords to go for. Additionally, it also allows you to further dig your keyword deeper in Network Search or Realtime Search.

5. Keywords Research in 32+ Languages: Keyword Country is the only keyword engine that gets you keywords in French, Spanish, Dutch, German and 32 other languages (and does it the right way). Foreign language support options enhance your keyword digging reach and allow you to generate your keyword list in languages other than English. This is ideal when your audience speaks multiple languages and lets you target non-English speaking regions.

6. Mispellings Keyword Research: Misspellings are the keywords that are cheaper to buy for Adwords campaigns and less competitive to achieve top search engine rankings. Keyword Country covers more than

8 sources of misspellings including mobile search misspellings and popular misspellings of English and 31 other languages. Here you can find many keywords that have less competition, considerable traffic, are cheaper to buy and easier to target.

7. Niche Keywords Brainstorming with Keyword Map Keyword Map sorts the keywords in a directory structure that helps you find the most popular niches that are driving traffic to your industry. It helps you uncover popular niches that are related to your main keyword but you are not targeting right now. A good amount of traffic flows towards these niches and the level of that increases every single month. It gives you excellent ideas on which you can build content and increase your website traffic and helps you discover many new opportunities. It is ideal when you are looking for new niches to compete in. Strengths:

1) Its not a Keyword list or keyword software, it's a Keyword Search Engine.

2) Highly relevant keyword results that work. And all this, within a few seconds!

3) Displays everything you need to be successful with AdSense

· Maximum CPC

· Estimated EPC

· Number of Sponsors

· Number of Clicks per month

· Profitability rankings

· KEI Analysis, R/S Ratio

4) Gives you access to:

· Most searched keywords that exist on planet earth

· Most clicked keywords

· Most high paying keywords

· Most low competition high value keywords

· Anchor texts that work

5) Equips you with three unique searching tools - Basic Search, Price Range Search, and Advanced Search.

6) Provides you with lots of Niche Keywords from 600,000 industries.

7) Provides Keyword Map that comprises of hosts of categories such as Arts, Computers, Health, Games, News, and Society. Helps you brainstorm for new topic and research out new topics for your existing website.

8) Gives you amazing niche keywords.

9) Good for AdSense as well as affiliate websites.

Weak Aspects:

1) Database conks out at times, but the frequency has reduced tremendously.

2) Keyword map can be quite confusing because of its depth.

3) Does not allow any keyword additions to database.

This tool is well worth investing in, the functionality of Keyword Country is unmatched and puts it in a league of its own for researching keyword phrases, it is the most complete keyword tool in the market and should be the first choice tool for SEO conscious web developers.

Keyword Elite Review - The Power of Adwords Keyword Research Tool

If you have some experience in using Google Adwords, you know that the KEY to Adwords success is finding and using the right keywords. But question is how do you find the right keywords? The answer is with Adwords Keyword Research Tool.

One very popular Adwords Keyword Research Tool I came across is Keyword Elite, but at first I wasn't impressed with this tool because I had been using Wordtracker as my keyword research tool. The main reason I use keyword research tool is to find long-tail keywords, it saves me a lot of time compared to if I do it manually.

Both Wordtracker and Keyword Elite are very useful in generating long-tail keywords. But what made me interested to take a closer look at Keyword Elite is its ability to spy on the keywords used by your Adwords competitors. This feature is very interesting but there is much more.

In fact, Keyword Elite consists of 5 components or "project types" as they call them. Each project has its own function. The 5 Projects are:

1. Create a keyword list.

2. Analyze pay per click listings.

3. Select a keyword list.

4. Analyze keyword competition.

5. Spy on AdWords Competition.

Project 1 is creating a keyword list. There are many adwords keyword research tools available in the market that can help you develop a keyword list. What Keyword Elite does is combining all the results from these tools (such as Overture, Google suggestion tool, Yahoo!, Ask and Meta Tags) and put them into one alphabetized spreadsheet. And if you have subscriptions for Wordtracker and KeywordDiscovery, you can add and combine the results as well.

You can do all these manually but it will take up a lot of your time as you need to use each tool individually. With Keyword Elite, you just enter your seed keyword, select the search engines you want to get results from and hit the OK button. You can select how many results to return anywhere from 100 to 10,000 keywords. It's a real time saver as you can develop hundreds or even thousands of keywords in just few minutes. After playing around with project 1 for a while, I began to realize why it’s the top adwords keyword research tool.

Project 2 will show you some interesting data. It lets you see ads and keywords that are currently being used by your competitors. You can see the actual URLs, what ads are being run, the rankings, bid amount, and other important statistics. You use this information to spy and learn from your competitors. Pick out the top 10 competitors, study their rankings, write better ads and out-bid them. You can do all these manually but it probably takes several days. With Keyword Elite, all this information is available in just few minutes. Again, it’s a real time saver.

Project 3 gives you the ability to generate your keyword list from from existing Keyword Elite's database. If your niche subject already has a keyword list developed, you will have your list generated in a flash, just enter the key term and half of your keyword research is done. It's as simple as that.

Project 4 gives you another way to spy on the competition. Here you put in the keyword you want to analyze and request Keyword Elite to show all the sites that are advertising for the keyword. You can request up to 100 sites but normally I just request for the top 10 sites. It will provide information such as PageRank, number of words, keyword density, etc. You can use the information to analyze why these sites are at the top, what are the things they've done right to achieve top spot and optimize your own website to achieve the same result. So far I haven’t seen any adwords keyword research tool that can provide such in-depth information.

Project 5 will help any Adwords advertisers to become successful. As mentioned the key to Google Adwords success is to bid on the profitable keywords. BUT problem is... how do you know what keywords are profitable? Here you can request Keyword Elite to run a report that shows you the number of days a particular keyword has been bid on. The longer that keyword is being bid on means it's more profitable. You can run the report for days, weeks or whenever you want to see if that keyword is still being bid on.

Conclusion:

Without a doubt Keyword Elite is the top Keyword Research Tool for Adwords advertisers. It’s a very powerful software tool that goes beyond keyword research and identifying of long-tail keywords, it also allows users to spy on their competitors and perform in-depth competitive analysis. Most of the tasks described can be done manually BUT doing so will take up a lot of your time. With KE you will save a lot of time in research and analysis, it gives you more time to focus on other more important business activities. If you are serious about making money using Google Adwords, I highly recommend you to invest on this keyword research tool.
