Keyword Tools For PPC Campaigns and Search Engine Optimization

What I am going to provide in this article is a brief explanation of why using a research keyword tool is important for you and your marketing strategies. You may find that one of these tools is all you need. Others may find that they need a series of tools to really find the keywords they need.

This article features a complete list of the leading and most effective keyword suggestion and analysis tools that I and several other thousands of internet marketers use, to get the most profitable low-bid keywords that are worth a gold mine.

Why Do I Need a Keyword Suggestion Tool ?

On the internet, every keyword is a market to itself, keyword are where you sales start. All of us use search engines and suitable keywords to find the exact information we need. How would the search engines know what we are looking for if publishers would not highly optimize their content ?

Successful Pay-Per-Click Campaigns

Using the right keywords, any internet marketer can have his ads appearing in the sponsored links results when a potential customer is searching for products related to his business.

Basically everything is pretty simple. Customers search for their desired keywords in order to find the exact products they need, using short or long tail keywords. That is exactly what you are looking for. Once the keywords are entered the search engine listing and the sponsored links pop-up, that is the place where you want to be listed in order to get highly targeted customers to your site.

Instead of paying huge amounts of money on PPC campaigns you can start optimizing your site with the most suitable and valuable keyword phrases. This is where the keyword suggestion tools come in. I have spend over 6 months using the free suggestions tools and nearly gave up, until I found two suggestions tools that are worth millions. They make all your work easier, spy on the competition, give you the most effective and profitable keyword suggestions. 'Spying on the competition' means you can duplicate the same success that other thousands of marketers have using the exact same keywords.

How to use a Keyword Suggestion Tool ?

1. Search volume. This shows you how many people are searching a specific keyword phrase, is it a highly searched keyword? The higher the number the greater the competition.

2. Competition. This part tells you how many other marketers are competing for the exact same keyword. Usually if the number is higher that means there are higher bids in the PPC (pay-per-click) campaigns.

3. Estimated cost per click (CPC - Average Bids) Keyword suggestion tools are great for several reasons but this one is one my favorite. If you have spent hours and hours researching low-bid keywords, then you don`t really have to worry anymore. Keyword suggestion tools give you an estimated cost per click amount for each and every keyword result you get. You`ll either see cents or they can be estimated in dollars for the high competitive keywords.

4. Keyword variations. The tool, based on an initial keyword root typed in, would generate short or long keyword phrases that are variations, extensions, synonyms or plurals. Keyword trends are always changing that is why using a keyword suggestion tool is always a must. The keyword variation factor is something that is important for improving your PPC campaigns or the organic search traffic. Real brainstorming.

How Search Engines Find You On the Internet - Part II - Keyword Optimization

Keyword optimization is one of most overlooked strategies when optimizing a web site. Keywords are the words and phrases people type in a search query when they are trying to locate a service or product. Keyword research and keyword optimization is the most important aspect in search engine optimization. If you are not targeting the keywords your customers are searching with, they will never find you which results in lost profits for your business. If you plan on building a high ranking web site or are writing articles, selecting relevant keywords should be top on your list.

Using keyword optimization is vitally important in order for search engines to find you on the Internet. Keyword research and keyword optimization is the step I spend most of my time on when writing articles or building web pages. Although this step can be very tedious and time consuming especially if you are doing keyword research without a search engine optimization tool, it is one of the most important steps of search engine optimization. It is a very important skill to learn. Coming to the realization that keyword research and keyword optimization is the most important part of your on line marketing will greatly improve your search engine rankings. Like learning any skill it takes time, but in the long run keyword optimization will pay off big time and result in profits for your on line business.

Keyword research and keyword optimization will increase your search engine ranking. Keyword research is researching and choosing keywords and keyword phrases that are being typed in by Internet users that are trying to locate your products or services. Once the optimization of these keywords and phrases are complete they are then weaved into the content of your article or web site.

So why is keyword research and keyword optimization so important? In order to reach your target audience on the Internet you need to know what terms they are using. When doing keyword research and using keyword optimization you are looking for what other people are typing in the search queries. It helps you define what people are trying to find in addition what words they are using to find products and services.

Crucial points to keep in mind when implementing keyword research and keyword optimization strategies:

One of the most common mistakes people make when doing keyword research and keyword optimization is believing they already know what keywords customers are using to find you. Do not assume you know. Keep in mind that someone searching for your products or services may not be familiar with keywords that you associate with your product(s). You need to think 'outside the box' and have an open mind.

Good keyword research and keyword optimization begins with brainstorming keywords and keyword phrases you believe your target audience may be using to find your products or services. This can be a very intimidating task, especially if you are not using a search engine optimization tool. Think about what your site is promoting and cover all of the contents or services of your site. Avoid generic terms such as books or shoes they are incredibly hard to rank for. Focus on relevant keywords and keywords that are not overused.

Once your keyword list is completed you will need to determine relevant keywords for your products or services and how you can weave the keywords into your content. If you have a keyword phrase or word that will not fit with your content you will be creating, the keywords or keyword phrases are useless.

The next step for good keyword research and keyword optimization is inputting your relevant keywords into a keyword research tool. There are ways to do this manually, one is utilizing free tools such as Overture to see how the keywords or keyword phrases are actually converting. A good keyword optimization tool or using keyword optimization software will indicate what keywords aren't too competitive and are the best to target for your product or service.

Keep in mind keyword research and keyword optimization is the most important aspect in search engine optimization. If you are not targeting the keywords your customers are searching with, they will never find you which results in lost profits for your business. You may as well save yourself time and money and not create that web site or write that article. It is as simple as that. If you want to rank well in the major search engines and want customers to find you then you need to utilize keyword research and keyword optimization.

Keyword Selection and Website Optimization

Choosing the right keywords for a website is an important and informative research task. In the process of improving your website you’ll learn a lot about your industry and your competitors.

Keywords are one the main factors that come into play in the algorithms used by major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Windows Live Search. If a web surfer is looking for home decorating tips and types ‘home decorating’ into a search engine, it will search its database for websites that contain that phrase and those individual words.

Selecting the correct keywords

If you are an expert in your field, you know what your customers are looking for. Specifically, you know many of the words and phrases your customers would use to describe your products and services. Start with what you know.

Write out a list of phrases and words that describe your business. If you have a home decorating business you may think of words like ‘interior design’ and ‘furnishings’. Sort your list so that the most common phrases are on the top of your list.

You will now want to cross-reference the list of keywords that you have compiled with other lists generated for your industry. This will bring to mind other keywords that you may not have thought of. I recommend using a popular web-based keyword research tool named Wordtracker (http://www.wordtracker.com). Wordtracker helps identify additional keywords and phrases and offers a free trial of their service. It provides only a limited number of related words, but is still a great starting point. Searching for related keywords for ‘home decorating’ with Wordtracker produces a list of keywords like 'home', 'decor', 'decorating', 'home decor', 'furniture', 'design', 'interior', 'interior decorating', 'art', 'wall', and 'fabric'.

Other keyword tools, which produce similar results, are also available. These include, among others, the web-based tools provided by Yahoo (Overture) (http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/), and Google (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal).

After compiling and merging the various lists of keywords, you’ll be ready to move on to the next step.

Using the correct keywords on your website

Now that you have a clear picture of which keywords web surfers may type into their search engine to find your business, you need to be sure your website contains these important keywords.

A strategy is required when updating your website to include the keywords in your list. Starting at the top of your list, quickly review the keywords. Think about which keywords would naturally be present on your website and which keywords you probably wouldn’t use. Using the first list of keywords, you may now start reviewing the different sections of your website.

Your selected keywords should be placed in various areas of your site with the proper frequency. Your website content should focus on making sense to your visitors, not fed with keywords that will hopefully improve your search positioning. Search engine algorithms can detect the over use of keywords, which can negatively affect your positioning. Let’s now look at different areas of your website.

Website Title

Every website has a title. This is not a website logo or a bold heading found on the top section of a website. The website title is displayed in the web browser’s title bar. This is the top most area of the window located to the far left of the window’s minimize, maximize, and close buttons. The website title is also the text that is displayed in search engine search results, which is often in a larger font and underlined. The website title is the first thing that a web surfer sees when performing a search. Web surfers quickly scan through search result website titles to evaluate which website will meet their needs. This is your first opportunity to grab their attention.

A website title should contain as many of your keywords as possible, while maintaining easy readability. This will do two things for you. First, the search engine will find your website in its database and display your website in their results. Second, the website title will catch the surfer’s interest as they see their search criteria matching your website title. Over-stuffing the title with keywords makes the title difficult to read and may be seen as abuse by search engines. The website title is updated by changing the text located between the opening and closing title tags, in the header of the HTML code. The title length should be kept to handful of words. The website description allows more space for describing your products and services.

Website Description

As with the website title, the website description should also contain a variety of keywords. Unlike the website title, the website description is not visible on any part of the website itself. The description is the summary information you see in search engines results, displayed below the website title. The website description gives you a little more space to describe your website and your products and services. Again, be sure that your description is easily readable for your visitors, in order to attract them to click your site title. The website description can be updated by changing the text in the description meta tag, in the header of the HTML code.

Website Keywords

Along with the title and description entries in the HTML code, there is also an area to define a set of keywords that you’d like to associate to the page. This is called the keyword meta tag. Keywords are entered as a comma separated list. The industry consensus is that the keyword meta tag is currently of little or no use with today’s major search engines. However, search engines continue to recommend their usage.

Website Content

This brings us to the meat of our website, so to speak. Our chosen keywords should be used throughout the website content where it makes sense. Again, over-stuffing page content with keywords so that the message is unnatural can be detected by search engines. A good practice is to use the keywords to make the page content more descriptive. For example, a pet store may sell a variety of pet foods. This can be written in a descriptive manner, such as, ‘dog food and cat food’, instead of using ‘dog and cat food’. In this example the keyword ‘food’ is used twice.

Headings and Hyperlinks

Special attention should be given to the usage of heading tags and anchor tags. Keyword usage in page heading is more valuable than keywords used in a paragraph of text. The same can be said with anchor tags (a.k.a. hyperlinks). Using keywords as the clickable text of a hyperlink is very valuable.

Keyword Density

Keyword density refers to the percentage of occurrences of your keywords compared to the other text on the web page. Keyword density tools such as Webconfs.com’s Keyword Density Checker (http://webconfs.com/keyword-density-checker.php) provides a visualization of the main theme or message on a chosen page. This tool counts the number of times each word is repeated on the page, which is a good test of how you’ve done at inserting keywords to optimize the content. It is also a good representation of how search engines will see your page. ‘More is better’ is not the most effective keyword density goal. Although the optimum keyword density is much debated, having some balance is definitely in order. A density below 1% makes it difficult for a search engine to understand your main message, where a density over 5% will start to make the content appear unnatural. At this stage in website optimization, the page content can be continually edited while the keyword density is being re-checked. Continue this process until your keywords are among the words with the highest density.

Conclusion

Choosing the correct keywords for your website is a must. Website keyword optimization is not rocket science, but it must be implemented carefully. By using the correct keywords, not only will your site be positioned well in search results, but it will draw visitors to your website.

Keyword Selection- The Dark Horse of Search Engines Optimization

Below are what I call the “10 Commandments” for Keywords.

To start with select “keyword phrases” NOT keywords. This is very important. After all, the keyword itself is included in the keyword phrase.

Consider select different endings for your keywords, (ing, ed, s and es).

Rack your brain and brainstorm with your friends to come up with a list of 25 to 50 keywords or keyword phrases.

Find out what keywords and keyword phrases your competitors are using. Do this by going to your competitor’s Web sites and click on “View” in the top toolbar and then click on “Source.”

Scroll down to the “Keywords Meta Tag” and you will see the keywords this competitor thinks are important. Repeat this with all of your important competitors.

Go to http://www.overture.com. Go to the "Term Suggestion Tool" and type in your keywords and keyword phrases. (Keep in mind that Overture groups singular and plural words together.)

Words with a count of 300 to 500 are good. Words with counts of 500 to 1,000 are great (maybe). It depends on a term called KEI that we will talk about later in this article.

Use Google’s Keyword Suggestion Tool at http://www.adwords.google.com.

The best place to get help with keywords is http://www.wordtracker.com. You can get a lot of free information here or pay about $7 and get even more information. The reason this site is so great is that it tells you how many times a keyword phrase is searched for, but it also tells you how many other sites are competing with you for the keyword or keyword phrase.

This information is combined into a term called a “Keyword Effectiveness Index” or KEI. A keyword phrase with a KEI of 0 to 10 usually should not be selected. 10 to 100 is good. 100 to 400 is great and above 400 is a gift from heaven.

All of this is explained completely on the WordTacker Web site so I won't repeat it here. Take time to read all of the instructions and information.

You can only optimize a page for 2 to 5 keywords or 2 to 3 keyword phrases. Don’t try to do everything on your home page. Decide how many pages you are going to have (3 to 5 are the minimum number of pages for high search engine rankings). Then use all of the above techniques to come up with your list of keyword phrases.

After you have selected your list of keywords and keyword phrases another good test to run is to find out the keywords that people are actually spending their money on.

How do you do this? It’s simple. Go to http://www.Amazon.com and search for book titles with your selected keywords or keyword phrases. Then check to see how the books rank in sales for Amazon. The lower the number the better.

A number of 5,000 means it is in the top 5% (assuming Amazon has one million books. They actually have many more.). If people are spending money buying books (on the Internet) about your keywords, it tells me that you have a good chance of selling your goods or services on the Internet also.

The last point to consider is how many times do you use your keyword phrases on each page? I have seen #1 ranking with a keyword phrase density of only 0.5% to over 20%. Google doesn't like high keyword densities any more. A good range to shoot for now is about 1% to 2%. Maybe a little higher, but not much. Google may increase this number in the future, but for now, keep your keyword phrase density low. Google calls a high keyword density "over optimization" and they can penalize a site for this.

That means if you have 300 words on your page, you would need to have about 6 to 21 keyword phrases on your page. Don't over do it and make your page sound silly. Read your page out loud and see if sounds alright. Be creative and you can get a lot of keyword phrases into your page and still make it sound reasonable. Also, it's important to have a high keyword density in the first 150 words on the page, but remember that if your page is in columns, the first word is the first word in your LEFT Nav. panel . . . NOT the first word in your center panel.

Use your keywords and keyword phrases in a sentence.

Search engines define a sentence as a group of three or more words that start with a capital letter and end with a period or other acceptable puncation mark. This also means you should put a period or question mark at the end of each heading or headline to make them look like a sentence and NOT like a group of keyowrds.

This means you should NEVER have just a list of keywords. Keywords that are not used in a sentence have very little (if any) value to increase your search engine ranking. In fact, if you go overboard, it could be labeled as keyword spamming by the search engines. This also means that keywords listed in your left Nav. panel will NOT help your rankings. The search engines cops are not stupid. They know what you are trying to do if you insert lists of keywords.

In summary, be creative, take your time and find the very best keywords and keyword phrases. After all, what good would it do you to get #1 rankings for keyword phrases that no one actually searches for.

The above information does not tell you everything about keywords and keyword phrases, but it points you in the right direction. I didn’t repeat the instructions that are included in the Web sites I referred you to.

Make sure your keywords or keyword phrases are used in all of your outbound links and try to get sites that are linking to you to use your keywords or keyword phrases in their links to your site. Otherwise, the links would not be very valuable to you.

Search Engine Optimization - Where to Place Your Keywords To Maximize Keyword Optimization

Keyword research and keyword optimization is one of the most important strategies to ensure top search engine ranking. Don't let your keyword research efforts go to waste by not knowing where to place your keywords. In a previous article I addressed 'HOW' to place your keywords for the best keyword optimization. Now I will address specifically 'WHERE' to place keywords and phrases to ensure the best overall keyword optimization and search engine optimization.

If you have not read my earlier article 'Search Engine Optimization:Good Keyword Optimization Is Knowing "How" To Place Your Keywords'. Let me just briefly reiterate what I covered in that article to ensure things flow smoothly. I discussed the need to know 'how' to integrate keywords into content in a constructive manner by using a few proven strategies. If you did not get a chance to read this article it might be a good idea to go back and read it first, if need be, to ensure you see the overall 'big picture' of true keyword optimization. The previous article covered:

How search engines index entire pages and how much content should be contained within a page.
Keyword prominence: finding the best place to place keywords.
Keyword proximity: how close together keywords are placed within a sentence.
Keyword density: measures the weight of keywords in the content.
Keyword frequency: the repetition of the keywords indicated.

Not only knowing 'how' to place your keywords throughout your content but 'where' to specifically place keywords can ensure maximum keyword optimization as well as overall search engine optimization. It is not difficult to achieve top search engine optimization if you just follow a couple of tested and proven strategies and don't try to reinvent the wheel.

This is 'where' to place your keywords in your content to achieve maximum overall keyword optimization:

The first strategy to ensure good keyword optimization: is to include the most important keywords or keyword phrases in 'Title Tags'. Use your most relevant keywords and make your title interesting enough where the readers will want to click on it. I see so many repeated titles for a specific topic, when you are competing with millions of titles in the same catagory you need to stand out, grab the readers attention. If you don't capture their attention in the title, you may not at all.

The second way to ensure good keyword optimization: is to use descriptive 'Meta Tags', this is what is most often used when the search engine displays your site in the search results. Again, just like in the title, it is extremely important to create an inviting description as it is a title, these are the first things your reader will see before they click.

The third way to ensure good keyword optimization: is to make good use of the 'Keyword Meta Tags'. The keyword meta tags will include the keywords and keyword phrases of your content. List the primary keywords or keyword phrases first and separate with commas, followed by the remainder of the keywords you will be using throughout your content. This is what enables search engines to find you.

The fourth way to ensure good keyword optimization is: to make use of 'Heading Tags' they hold separate topics between paragraphs. H1 is used for large bold, and H6 is for very small bold. The 'Heading Tags' should include your most important keywords.

The fifth way to ensure good keyword optimization: is to utilize the 'Alt Tag'. This tag will add text in place of an image. Some readers will turn the graphics off when reading some content to ensure faster loading. These 'Alt Tags' should include the description of the link destination and should include your keywords.

The fifth and final strategy that will ensure good keyword optimization: are 'Hypertext Links'. Make sure to include your keywords or keyword phrases in your link.

It is critical for good keyword optimization as well as overall search engine optimization to know 'where' and 'how' to place your keywords. Using these tactics will improve your overall search engine ranking. Stick with tested and proven strategies to ensure the best keyword and overall search engine optimization.
